Resume

I started in 1976 hand-coding hex on an HP 8080 learning kit, and the curiosity hasn’t really changed since: how do these machines actually work, and what can I build with them that didn’t exist before? The career that followed has run through Microsoft, Tweddle Group, Disney, Amazon, Google, and Meta — building products meant to be useful to the actual humans in front of them. Photography has been a parallel discipline since 1999, and right now I’m hands-on with AI / RAG systems for the same reason I was soldering boards in 1977: the only way to learn it is to build it.

At a glance

  • Senior PM with 30+ years across consumer products, productivity software, and large-scale cloud systems. Currently leading product for Amazon AMXL.
  • Shipped at Microsoft (Word for Windows 1, Flight Simulator), Tweddle Group (Toyota / Lexus connected-car), Amazon (Cloud Drive Photos seeded Rekognition; now AMXL), Disney Parks, Google (Automotive), and Meta (Proton).
  • Strengths: synthesizing technical / UX / business into clear product strategy, experimentation and metrics, cross-functional leadership, AI-first features, scaling to millions of users.
  • Currently building real RAG / AI / hyperlocal-weather projects — each its own excuse to learn something I couldn’t learn by reading about it.
  • Based in Seattle.

Selected work

Amazon — Senior Product Manager, Technical (Last Mile / AMXL)

Bellevue, WA · 2024 – present

Lead the product side of Last Mile technology for Heavy & Bulky deliveries (AMXL), so delivery associates can complete in-home and business services, not just drop a box on a porch.

  • Defined the technical architecture for expanding AMXL services into stand-alone, consolidated, and return workflows.
  • Drove a 20%+ reduction in incomplete service deliveries across the U.S. through structured experimentation and UX work on the associate-facing app.
  • Partner with engineering, UX, and applied-science teams on service flow design, performance evaluation, and adoption with delivery partners.

Google — Senior Product Manager, Automotive Developer Platform

Kirkland, WA · 2022 – 2023

Owned product strategy for the developer ecosystem behind Google-built-in vehicles — the platform partners use to bring their apps into the car.

  • Shipped in-car gaming four months ahead of plan, which made the Google I/O announcement possible.
  • Mapped the technical and UX gaps between Android Mobile and Android Automotive so partners had a clear migration path instead of a folkloric one.
  • Ran partner onboarding, app testing, and certification end-to-end, keeping app behavior compatible with the constraints automotive imposes — driver attention, latency, hardware variability.

Meta — Product Manager, Internal Design Tools

Seattle, WA · 2019 – 2020

Led product direction for Proton, Meta’s internal React-based interface design tool used by engineers and designers across the company.

  • Doubled engagement (100%+ increase) in six months by focusing UX work on the highest-friction workflows.
  • Aligned Proton with modern React engineering patterns so it became the default design tool internally instead of one of several.
  • Worked with engineering, design, and research to set roadmap priorities and lift sentiment among internal users.

Disney Parks & Resorts — Lead Product Manager, Mobile Commerce

Seattle, WA · 2017 – 2018

Owned mobile commerce for tours, parties, and special events across Disney Parks. The job was figuring out how to sell the non-ticket experiences inside the app guests were already using.

  • Delivered new commerce flows projected to add $10M in annual revenue.
  • Shipped Special Event Ticketing months ahead of schedule and at half the planned budget — three months for the MVP instead of the planned twelve — by ruthlessly trimming scope.
  • Ran agile development across engineering, design, and the business stakeholders who actually live with the merchandising decisions.

Amazon — Senior Product Manager, Cloud Drive Photos

Seattle, WA · 2013 – 2016

Directed product strategy for the photo and video processing services behind Amazon Cloud Drive (the consumer Prime Photos product).

  • Scaled content processing to 50M photos and 1M videos per day while bringing per-unit cost down and improving P90 latency.
  • Built the photo tagging engine that later seeded Amazon Rekognition’s consumer-facing capabilities.
  • Launched Cloud Drive APIs that simplified integration across Amazon’s storage and media services.

Microsoft & earlier career

1990s – 2010s

Started as a software engineer on the original release of Word for Windows, then shipped consumer and developer products across Microsoft Answers, Partners in Learning, Rich Media Group, Expression, Flight Simulator, the Moab photo editor, and Microsoft Games. Earlier still: automotive connectivity for Toyota Entune / Lexus Enform via Tweddle Group, and mobile services / e-commerce at Techwave / Network Commerce.

  • On the original Word team, built automation frameworks and the performance / stability evaluation systems for the first commercial release — a foundation in productivity workflows, reliability, and user trust I’ve leaned on ever since.
  • Across later Microsoft PM roles, drove clarity between engineering, design, and business teams on what to build, in what order, and why.
  • Toyota / Lexus connected-car work was the first time I built software where shipping wrong meant a guest stranded in their car — useful instinct for everything that came after.

Career timeline

1976
1976: I Discover Microprocessors
Early in High School, I am introduced to microprocessor. I can program a computer that can fit inside a suitcase. The programming was straight 8080 Hex entered by a keypad.
1977
1977: My First Microcomputer

Sophomore year of high school, I had access to a Northstar Horizon microcomputer. I worked to help assemble them at the Byte Shop in Walnut Creek. My first major project was a Star Wars game written in assembly using ASCII characters for the display. I also added some updates to the operating system user experience.

1984
1984: Harvey Mudd College Clinic

My first engineering clinic project was experimenting with unusual options for pasteurizing beer for Anheuser Busch. We were able to get good results with ultrasound, but the end cost was too expensive to implement.

1985
1985: Second Harvey Mudd Clinic

My senior clinic project was building a finite-elements model of the Large Deployable Reflector for NASA.

1986
1986: Graduate School building Instrumentation

Started graduate school at the UW Department of Zoology. My first work was building instrumentation. I needed a viscometer and mechanism to measure the speed of blood in a lugworm.

1987
1987: Collecting Animal Specimens

Hunting for lugworms. My research was measuring the efficiency of blood flow based on temperature.

1988
1988: Started Programming Windows

I worked on the Mac for a few years. But I believed that Windows was a more object-oriented environment, so I started learning Windows 1.0 programming. (in Pascal).

1989
1989: Early Microsoft

Started at Microsoft as a Software Engineer in Test. Creating test code for Word for Windows. Testing the coding environment (Word Basic), performance, and stability. Built test apps for Dynamic Data Exchange and Dynamic Linked Libraries.
